An interesting workshop for scientists who teach:

The aim of the workshop is to give insight about improving the learning process and focusing on necessary skills for career in molecular life sciences. The workshop will consist of interactive lectures, small-group discussions and panel discussions. The expected participants are academicians, young scientists and PhD students in molecular life sciences.

Turkish Biochemical Society and the organizers are very sorry to announce that the FEBS Congress in Kuşadası from 3rd to 8th September is cancelled due to complicated political situation in Turkey.

The 2017 FEBS Congress is held in Jerusalem, Israel on 10–14 September.

Year 2012

 

 

The Estonian biochemists have a long tradition to organise spring schools for members of the Society and the guests interested in the topic. In the reporting year that event was held in Viljandimaa, the Vanaõue Recreation Centre on May 11–12. According to the tradition of spring schools all participants make a report on results of his or her work or alternatively they consider a problem of general nature interesting to biochemists. Those outings are traditionally organised by Tallinn and Tartu biochemists in rotation. The spring school 2012 was dedicated to “Neurochemistry” and was held as a joint event with doctoral school in biomedicine and biotechnology. The curator of the spring school was professor Peep Palumaa of the Gene Technology Institute of Tallinn University of Technology and the executive organiser was doctoral student of the same Institute Katrina Laks (Kivimäe). The annual meeting of the Society was held in the electronic format.

The annual congress of the Federation of the European Biochemical Societies (FEBS), held in Seville in the reporting year, was attended with papers by 3 members of the Society. The work of the FEBS Council held at the end of the Congress was attended, as representatives of Estonia, by Chairman of the FEBS Advanced Courses Committee Jaak Järv and President of the Society Peep Palumaa.

With the aim to popularising the research activities among students and to spur on to greater efforts the best students, who have succeeded to publish their results even before obtaining master’s degree, the Estonian Biochemical Society has awarded student science prizes since 2007 (guidelines of the contest are available on website of the Society). At contest of this year all prizes went to the University of Tartu. The first prize was granted to Margot Hein. Karin Mardo and Katrin Kalind were also recognized with prizes.

As the result of the work of commission on terminology of the Society the publication on Society’s website of the draft version of English-Estonian biochemical terms was updated and replenished.

Estonian Biochemical Society has been member of Federation of European Biochemical Societies since 1991.

 

 

 

Year 2011

In 2011 the traditional Spring School of the Society was held on May 6–7 in West-Virumaa in the Pariis village. According to the tradition of spring schools all participants deliver a paper on results of his or her work or else they consider a problem of general nature interesting to biochemists. Those outings are organised alternatively by Tallinn and Tartu biochemists. The curator of Spring School 2011 was Professor Ago Rinken of Institute of Chemistry of the University of Tartu. It was particularly heartening that geography of participants had broadened –attending were scientists from Tallinn University and Institute of Chemical and Biological Physics. Nominated Chairman of Committee of Fundamental Course of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS), the long-serving President of the Estonian Biochemical Society Member of Academy Jaak Järv tendered notice on his intention to stand down from the office of President. At the meeting of the Board held on April 14 in Tartu, elected new Chairman of the Society was Professor of Genomics and Proteomics of Tallinn University of Technology Peep Palumaa.

The Biochemical Society participated also at organising the XXII Estonian Chemistry Days, in whose framework one session was dedicated to biochemistry.

The annual FEBS Congress, held in Turin in the reporting year, was attended by 3 members of the Society delivering papers. Chairman of Committee of Fundamental Course of FEBS Jaak Järv and President of the Society Peep Palumaa participated, as representatives of Estonia in the work of the session of the FEBS Council, held at the end of Congress.

Since 2007 the Estonian Biochemical Society has awarded student science prizes (guidelines of the contest are available on website of the Society). In 2011 the first prize was granted to master student in gene technology of Tallinn University of Technology Eneken Helk for the article published in the journal Analytical Chemistry. The prize was also awarded to master student of Tallinn University Anna-Liisa Ikart. The nominees of the prize presented their results at the Spring School of the Society.

The work of commission on terminology of the Society was consummated by publication on Society’s website in December of the draft version of English-Estonian biochemical terms, to be further updated and renovated.

A highlight of the reporting year was the lecture by Nobel Prize Laureate Edmond H. Fischer co-organised by the Society on the topic “The origin of reversible protein phosphorylation as a regulatory mechanism” on November 8 at the University of Tartu. The unique opportunity to hear the Nobel Prize winner was used by students and members of faculty of the University of Tartu and Tallinn University of Technology. Annual Meeting of the Society was organized electronically. The financial report was approved and new fees were established for full members and students.

Student award winners of 2011 were Eneken Helk and Anna-Liisa Ikart from Tallinn University of Technology.

This event was organized by Tartu biochemists in Pariis, which is a small village in East-Virumaa, Estonia. Participants were from Tartu University, Tallinn University of Technology, Tallinn University and the National Institute of Chemical and Biological Physics.

Spring School of the Estonian Biochemical Society
This event was dedicated to problems of Structural Biology.  Lecturers were Vello Tõugu, Aare Abroi, Aivar Lõokene, Ago Samoson, Sergei Kopantchuk, Peep Palumaa, Ago Rinken, Nigulas Samel Raik-Hiio Mikelsaar and Erki Enkvist.  Next day session was used by students, reporting results of their research projects.

Annual Meeting of the Estonian Biochemical Society
Report of President and Financial Reprt were approved, Student Awards were announced and participants discussed future activities of the Society, including the Estonian language termionology project (Indrek Viil) and contacts with other Societies (Ago Rinken). Ago Rinken and Ursel Soomets were elected as new Board members, Jaak Järv, Peep Palumaa and Vello Tõugu were re-elected.  Jaal Järv was re-elected as President of the Society.

The 34th FEBS Congress in Prague. There were 6 participants from the Estonian Biochemical Society. The FEBS Council Meeting adopted the new Statutes of the Federation.

Spring school for Society members and other interested scientists was organized in Veski sporting camp near Otepää on May 8-9. Participants arrived from Tartu and Tallinn and following the traditions of this event, all these 45 students and academics had to take floor for short presentation. The 33th FEBS Congress and 11. IUBMB Conferense in Athens. 12 Estonian participants presented posters. The FEBS Council Meeting discussed the new Statutes for the Federation.

Spring Seminar of the Society in Nelijärve resort.  Event was attended by 40 members, Participants presented  21 reports, The most exiting presentation was made by Minna Varikmaa and Kaija Laiduner under conduction of Laura Herm.
